Hargeysa (Hubaal)– A group of parliamentarians said they are planning to question government ministers about why the government is not applying the country’s press law, a law that was passed by both Houses and that was signed by President Dahir Rayale.
Among the parliamentarians were Saeed Elmi Rooble, Bashir Tukale, Muhammad Jama Rayte, and Muhammad Aw Ali Shabeel.
The parliamentarians were stirred into action by the increasing frequency of the government’s assaults on the independent press.
Mr. Saeed Elmi Rooble said the job of the press is to protect the community’s interest by informing the citizen about what is going on, and that is why it is unacceptable to persecute the press. He also noted that they are aware that the press laws which they passed are not being implemented by the government and those criminal laws are being used instead. He stressed that it is imperative that the government and the judiciary apply the laws passed by parliament such as the press law.
Similarly, parliamentarian Muhammad Jama Rayte remarked that if the government that is supposed to uphold the law is actually breaking the law, which means the government is not protecting the public interest.
